Opportunities don't just come up and slap you in the face. It seems very true that people set aside social service as something to do when their lives are free of stress and responsibilities. The "ideal moment" is never ideal. In fact, the moment for you to take a stand or make a difference can come about when you feel the most distraut. Americans are constantly taught a sense of hopelessness and fear. It seems almost like a control mechanism to "dumb down" our sense of social responsibility. There is no place better than right here, and no time better than right now to make a difference. Feeling unsure, fearful, or out of place with yourself is a humanistic trait that we have to embrace. Fears cannot be conquered if they are never challenged and if we fear that our future seems grim then we need to do something about it now.
I was surprised to learn that Dr. King earned a "C" in philosophy. It proved to me that, in order to change the world, all you have to do is believe that you can. I believe Loeb purposely added this fact about Dr. King to show readers that heros aren't born, they're made.

I agree that there is no ideal moment and everyone has responsibilities but that should not keep us from getting involved. In the times that we are most upset and angered with the problems around us that should be the spark we need to get involved.
ReplyDeleteI totally spelled distraught wrong!
