Imagine a world where nobody listened, and no one cared about anyone else but themselves. Although it may already seem like our world is plagued with self-centered individuals, there are things to consider on a much grander scale: our society is uneducated, misinformed, and confused.
More often than not, people base personal opinions off of stereotypical application. Who are we not to take a step back, and listen? Most often, we find the things that we once thought to be true, far from what's really going on and extremely far from the big picture.
Listening to others makes us informed and educated. It also changes the way we see people, and the way we see life.
Listening lets us learn and makes us feel the pain and suffering we have yet to endure.
The story the girl tells about her abusive home life may change your view of runaways.
The story the boy tells about being persecuted for his sexuality may change your view on gay relationships.
Stories open our eyes and open our hearts.
Whatever the case, take the time to listen. Someone's story could change your life.

Kiah,
ReplyDeleteI agree. You never really know the real story unless you stop and take the time to listen. What if we all decided to only pay attention to rumors, rather than stopping to listen to the truth. Our entire world would be a lie. It's important to listen and understand in order to completely grasp the importance and meaning in stories that are told. I think we have the same general idea.
Hey Kiah,
ReplyDeleteWhat you wrote about is definitely true. Listening does prove to make us more educated as well as informed. It opens our hearts and lets both sides of the story in, no matter what our opinion may be. It also makes us more fair and understanding, I couldnt imgine a world if this were not true. Just like in the book, the examples do tend to make you think and almost question your ideals before hand. It really makes you think. I am glad we can use stories to learn about different people and ourselfs.
One reason that I believe that our society is misinformed is from what the media displays to us. Like in last week's group conversation we talk about how the news or media is always showing the negative things going on in the world. I think we get so use to hearing all the negative thoughts that we really don't listen to it anymore. For this reason we just block out any negative stories we hear when in reality we are missing very important life learnings.
