Stories Have Impact on Our Life

Other people’s stories are very important because it has somehow a lesson that shape our life and teaches us how to behave, act, and understand what’s out there in the world from problems that we might face. Stories help us feel other people pain and passion towards their goal and become a better listeners and readers. As Loeb recalls, “Powerful individual stories create community, and they let us glimpse the lives of those older and younger, richer and poorer of different races, from places will never see.”
It’s really hard for me to sum up my whole life in few sentences because I’ve been through so much throughout my life. In my CPD class, our professor made us write essays, and she changed it into a book. We named it The Story of My Life, so if anyone is interested I could share it with them. However, I want to share this story, which taught me how to use money wisely and in the right place, with everyone. Once up a time when I was eight-years-old, I used to collect my birthday money that I got from my aunts and save it. At that time, we needed every cent because Mom was raising us, my brothers and I, by herself. But, I didn’t understand that at the moment. So, I took the money and bought some shiny stickers that have beautiful cartoon characteristics. Its glitter made my eyes attracted to it, and I wanted it so bad since everyone in my school has them. I didn’t tell my mother when I bought them. So, when she found out about it, she became so mad and her punishment was to return them, the stickers, to the market. Of course I didn’t want to because that would make me so embarrassed in front of the owner of the market, but it taught me many lessons. First, I learned to be responsible for my own mistakes, and second to use money wisely. Even though the money was mine, I still had to look out of my small box and understand that my family needed this money more than I did. I know it was a stupid mistake, but it made an impact on my life and taught me to look to the bigger picture which is helping people is more important than my own needs and necessities.
The same thing with Loeb stories. It’s teaching us to get involve in our community and to help others even if we’re not going to see the outcomes because as he said, “The risks and commitments we undertake today may leave a better world for those yet to come. We can view our lives as a bridge between past and future.”

  1. Rana, I agree with you that listening to other stories affects how we act and behave. I also feel it allows us to see where other people are coming from. I also feel, it allows us to learn and grow in who we are. Listening to someones story can help us from preventing past history events that we feel are not ethical.

  4. Rana,
as I listen to/read more of your personal stories on how you have grown up, I appreciate you more and more. You help me by opening my mind to what influences shape a person into who they are and how I can always stand to learn more about them. I am sorry that you had to learn such a hard lesson at an age so young, but I am glad that you have grown from that experience in a positive way.
