Just Jump! To get involved.

If we jump into making the world a better place and forget our comfort zone we might have skills and ambitions we never knew we had until we just jumped in. My dad always said "if you come home from work with clean hands you need to go back out and get them dirty." I always shrugged it off as "ok dad ill listen to you cause you want me too." But the more and more i think about it as im getting older the more it makes sense to me that if your hands are not dirty you cant show you did any work.We can use this in helping our community as well, if we go out and come back with no satisfaction that people heard us or knew what we were standing for, our hands are not "dirty."
I also had an experience with my church about a year ago were the whole church body was invited to visit different churches throughout the valley to see the many different ways people worship. What i saw was only a couple people wanted to go and see first hand what other people do around the valley on sunday mornings. I took this as people didnt want to step out of their comfort zone and visit other churches in order to see for them selves what was going on. I asked my friends mom that attends my church why she didnt go and she answered that she would rather read about than to go.I think the hardest part of letting go of our old secluded life is our comfort zone. Not many people get out of their comfort zone because they dont try. If we take the first step of reaching out and getting involved thats pretty much all we need to get going and move forward. Each of us have differnt skills we bring to the table because we are all differnet and if we work together and step forth we can
clear unimaginable obstacles in our way.

  1. Getting your hands "dirty." I like how your father put this. If we go out and feel that we aren't helping enough or that we didn't make some kind of impact, then our hands aren't dirty enough and we need to go back out again and do more. It is very true that people don't want to go back out again because they felt uncomfortable the first time and their hands weren't dirty, so why go out of their comfort zone again to see the same results? People need to realize that things won't always be the same and that there will be the one time where someone finally realizes that "Wow, this is different and I love the impact I have made." Sometimes if people go out of their comfort zones with others that they know, that can help in the process of getting their hands "dirtier" faster.

  2. I totally agree with your point about needing to step out of your comfort zone! I agree because you will never know what you are capable of until you take that risk. I also feel that when you step out of your comfort, or routine that is truely when you learn the most abput yourself. For instance, my brother is really shy. He wanted to be in ROTC and in that class you have to do community service and wear a uniform. He was terrifed to do so, however my parents made him join and he ended up finding a true passion for ROTC and for helping the young kids at a school near by. Now he has discovered he wants to be a councelor at an elementary school when he gets older. If he never took that risk and stepped out of his comfort zone... he would have never discovered that.

  3. Wow your Dad's saying ROCKS! There is no point in putting time and energy into working in the community if we don't accomplish anything in doing so.

We definitely need to step out of our comfort zone more often and experience things first hand. If we spend our entire life just "reading" about different experiences we will never really know what it's like.
