Ignorance is Bliss

"If we convince ourselves that nothing can change, we don't have to risk acting on our dreams." Many people have a process of thought which prohibits them from getting involved. They think that just one person can not possibly make a significant difference in the world. This way of thinking is absolutely false. “To the world, you may be one person but to one person, you may be the world.” Each and every one of us has the ability to help change others’ lives in a positive way. Sometimes, you do not even realize what an unimaginably important difference you have made. Being in many difficult situations myself that left me with little hope, I can truthfully say that it is those caring individuals that gave me the strength and the willpower to keep on going.
As long as people keep thinking that their simple actions could never change anything, then they will not. We have to realize that every little thing we do will count in some way. Take this situation for instance; a woman is in the grocery store checkout line and the lady in front of her realizes that she is five dollars short of being able to pay for her groceries. The woman behind her offers to pay the five dollars that the other woman is missing and she is able to get all of her items. Now, to the woman who helps pay for the groceries, five dollars may be nothing, but to the other woman, that five dollars will be the difference between her being able to feed her children that night or not. Each of us holds the power to make a change. The question is what will we do with it? We can just ignore all the problems around us and continue thinking that we will always live in a society that is simply far too broken to be fixed, or we can take a stand against cynicism and put in the necessary effort to make a difference.
People have learned to separate themselves from the problems of the world as long as it doesn’t affect them personally. People have chosen to ignore reality and they refuse to step outside their own boxes to see the suffering in the world. I have seen it time and time again; the individuals who view themselves as superior to those in society who are not as well off as them, and therefore brush these people off to the side as if they are lesser beings. Without knowing each person’s story, so many individuals are quick to judge and think that those without homes are just too lazy to get a job or that they are addicts, which is not always the case. There are some people who scoff at the idea that there many deserving individuals out there who, if simply given the opportunity, would exceed expectations and make a positive life change. Many are scared that if they were to become educated on the issues of our society and learn the facts, that they might actually care and then they would have to become involved and let’s just face it—most people today are just too selfish to be concerned with the problems of others. It extremely important to keep an open mind and educate ourselves on what is really going on in the world today so that we can take the necessary measures to make a difference. Change must occur within us first in order for us to begin to change the world around us.

  1. Most people think that to make a change in the world around us that we have to do something above and beyond anyones expectations. Although that is not always case for its the little things in life that can have much more of an impact on somebody elses life just like you said in your blog. I think most us don't think about the little things cause we are too caught up on trying to make a change that everyone will notice and recognize you for. We must force ourselves from thinking about the big picture and look at the smaller things in life.
