I got started with activism through the television show Captain Planet. The main point of the show was to pick up trash and recycle, because it is good for us and Mother Nature. I also observed as a child my grandparents recycling and getting money for recycling. Recycling was not only good for the planet, but for my pocket book as well. I have taken these lessons and have added to them. Now I am teaching my family to get even greener. We unplug televisions and toasters when we are not using them, and recently we added a solar water heater to our house. I have been lucky to be involved in school activities like the National Honor Society and now SLICE were volunteering is important to the organization.
Some abilities I can bring to activism is my passion and dedication. When there is something I strongly believe in I support it 100 percent. If there is anything that can be done I will do. I can also lock in and fight for the cause. When you support something there will always be opposition that is why you have to know the problem inside and out.
My favorite quote in chapter 3 was what Cornel West said about "stepping out on nothing, hoping to land on something." I think that is how it is for a lot of new thing we try. We do not know what is going to happen, however we hope we can land on our feet and start running.
Hey Christian,
ReplyDeleteYour post was similar to mine in the fact that we both focused on how dedication is important to active within the community. It is not possible to fully complete a task of volunteering until your heart is completly with the cause. I also think that it is great that you included your passion. It is a great quality to posses.
I also think it is very inspiring how you and your family are conserving electricty and other resources. I know sometimes I am guilty about leaving things on and how hard it can be to remember but I am going to try my best to help our environment.
You win the award for greatest reference this week Christian!!!! Captain Planet FTW!!! lol
ReplyDeleteI think that it is so admirable of you to instill practices of environmentally sound measures within your family! Recycling makes such a difference, and yes, can even make you some money! Living an environmentally smart lifestyle is not only good for the world, but the wallet. I am glad you do your part!
First of, your reference to Captain Planet is definitely amazing. Aside from that, I think it is great that your whole family supports your desire to make a change. It is so important to have a good support system in order to fulfill your dreams. Leading by example is the most effective way to get as many people involved as possible and it is obvious that you are putting in the effort to do that to the utmost. You have the ability to inspire people to take environmental issues seriously and to change their ways.
