Active citizens are vital to the community and the world. They bring about much needed change, and hope for others that are waiting for their change. Without these people my life wouldn’t be much of a life. I was thinking about all of the things that would be different in my life without movements throughout history. There are so many things I do everyday that would be affected, but most of them seemed to fall into one category-- women’s rights. Two hundred years ago women were considered to be property, owned by their parents or husbands. They weren’t allowed to do, well anything really. They couldn’t work, drive, wear what they wanted to, vote, and the list goes on. Now women play a vital role in society. There are so many things that women can bring to the table. Without women throughout history, I lot of important ideas would have been passed over. And so many things that we use with out wondering where they came from would not exist-for example, the diaper, pictures, and functional sleeves.
None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for the active citizens that took that first step and made a stand. Women’s rights are a great example of how people will follow you if you start the process. At first no one cared, and the women just thought that’s how life was. First a couple of women were unhappy and spoke their mind, then more, then some men started realized the injustice, and so on. If it wasn’t for those first couple of women that took a stand, I don’t think anyone would have done anything. That’s why it is so important for us to get involved and be active citizens. If we are out there speaking our mind, someone will hear us. Reaching just one other person can make a world of difference.
Haha I never knew that women invented the sleeve...how genius! :)
ReplyDeleteI find myself puzzled when I think of the women's rights movement or the civil rights movement or any movement. We always hear phrases like "there's nothing new under the sun" or "history always repeats itself" which are somewhat discouraging to me. Why do we never learn?
100 years ago it was normal to look down upon women, 50 years ago it was normal to look down upon African Americans. I like to ask myself, what are we doing that is normal to us today, but will be realized to be inhumane or unjust in another fifty years?
The good ol days. That a joke. Yes it is cool how far we have come. I hope we can do something half as important with our own lives.
ReplyDeleteThat's a deep thought Morgan. I never thought of it that way. You got me thinking :)
