Ready, Set, SPEAK

I believe that the media can be blamed a substantial amount for the disbelief of a single person having an influence in closing the gap that divides the rich and the poor. The media does not want to show the reality of American life because of the nation's image of being the land of opportunities. By hiding or even forgetting about a problem, it never gets solved. I think Loeb is sharing the success stories in reassurance of how one can make a difference. He is saying there needs to be more Allison Smith's in the office, community centers, or schools standing up " red-faced, hesitant, and [at the time being] embarressed," because Allison Smith was the only one who spoke her opinion. Her story was a prime example of the magnitude a single soul can have on the world. She didn't let herself be her biggest critic because she took the risk and jumped at letting her voice be heard.

A life without being able to listen or have a voice may seem like a Hallelujah moment for any husband, but time would be at a stand still. Everyone has an opinion and it should be heard. I relate to this from my own story from the recent Presidental Election. I was having dinner with both my sisters and their boyfriends as well as my father and step mother. I was finally of age to vote and was enthusiastic for waiting in the what should be dreadful line, but I didn't care because I was given the right to choose who I wanted my next president to be. As we were talking lightly about politics, I found out that I was the only one in the room who registered to vote. It completely shocked me. Everyone of my family members and significant others did not take advantage of their inner voice. My sisters (like in the previous blog) think that my efforts will not be substantial, but what they don't realize the impact community service has had on me. I always say I feel so selfish because I love being involved in community service because of all it gives back to me. I take so much away from it that I know will help me in my future

  1. How do you think the media would help by showing the everyday citizens? Would it really close the gap between the rich and the poor?

I loved your blog, I feel the same way about community service!

  2. Well said Lucy! It's good to hear that you have an interest in the importance of voting!

I am glad that the service you are doing, all the work you do, is rewarding you so much! You don't strike me as very selfish, Lucy!
