Heart, Spark, or Spirit

As the book says "whatever we use for the mysterious force" that drives us to live life everyday cannot show its "fullest potential...in isolation." Virgina Ramirez's story demonstrates a strong connection to bringing out the fullest potential of her soul. She sacrificed her entire life as she knew it to improve a communities physical appearance as well as emotional strength. Her strength and courage to step miles outside her comfort zone to face powerful people was very powerful and inspirational. Being torn between her own desires and family shows sometimes it is necessary to place yourself and your own needs before others. In her case this benefited, not only her, but her family, culture, and her community. Derrick Bell, also, showed enormous strength by taking his leave to encourage the hire of a minority woman. As said in the chapter it takes more effort to take a vow of silence because it erodes one's soul. I could not imagine staying silent and not speaking my mind for a cause I truly believe in. I feel like i have to tell people how i am feeling to get them see my point of view. The person I am would be more like Virgina Ramirez forcing myself to stand in front of a crowd giving a motivating speach because i feel words can have more of an impact than action. I feel it is better to speak out getting more people involved by showing them your vision, thoughts, and feelings towards a cause.

  1. Skyler, What if words are not enough? Sometimes actions have to be there in order for things to happen. How many times have politicians said they will do this or that and nothing ever materializes? I sometimes think actions speak louder than words. I applaud you for standing up in front of people and talking though. I still get nervous talking to a group of people but I will jump in to join a cause or put action into motion. Good Job!

  2. Hello Skyler, I really connected with Virginia's story when I read it too. I saw it in a different light however. When I read about her, I had true admiration for her, the courage to stand up and talk in front of a group...just amazing to me. I have a terrible fear of public speaking, but service, down and dirty, nice and gritty hard work, that's what I'm talking about! I am glad you have courage to speak up for what you believe in. Like Dr. V said, when it comes time for action, could you step away from the podium and take action?

  3. I liked your words Skyler. I do have one qualm. If you were asked to be a leader for a group, and the topic is something you feel passionately about, could you choose to step down when you WANT to talk for the sake of the other person? I feel that yes, it is an amazing thing to speak your mind, truly the best thing about being conscious of yourself, but it isn’t necessarily the best option, all the time. I like that it is first impulse, for most that isn’t the case. I am reserved, but if I feel like talking, like yourself, I will say what I need to say.

  4. Skyler, throughout the many conversations we have had, I have noticed that you have a strong personality and you definitely have the will to speak your mind. I agree with you that giving a motivational speech can bring a crowd and a group together, but referring to what Jeremy said, would you be willing to let some one else do the talking while you show your beliefs through actions?
