common differences

I think it is crucial to be accepting and open-minded to others opinions. We always want others to listen to what we have to say yet we don't take the time to listen to others. When in fact we can learn a lot from listening to someone who has different views. You obtain a new perspective by listening to others. Although we'd rather be self-consumed and only want to hear our own opinions another's could change our lives. It is important to seek out people who are different from us so as to give us opportunity to make a change of how we view the world or at least to see where other's are coming from. We can =not just accept something because our parents said it was right. Think about years ago with slaves, how in anyone's mind could that have been portrayed as acceptable?
I really connected with the story called "A good atheist". By first reading the title I didn't even want to read about an atheist. That right there shows how judgmental we are as humans. Being a good atheist in my mind seems contradictory. However, after reading the story it changed my opinion. For the most part we are who we are because of how our parents brought us up. Yet what we do with our lives and what we make of ourselves is what truly defines us. In the story hazel says she is just trying to be a good atheist and in reality what she meant is she's just trying to be a good person. Everyone has the potential within themselves to either be good or to be evil. The one we decide to take advantage of makes all the differences. Hazel's story shows that everyone has this potential. There are people who do not care to become involved and stay evil because they wither away from not getting involved. S.l.i.c.e. is one of the best opportunities that nay of us could have been given. We are working in groups to accomplish long term goals rather than by ourselves.s Through hazel's story we can see what draws us together. It is the common ground that we share between each other. Our commonalities are seen through helping others.

  1. I completely agree Christiana. If we don't listen to others then we would all be stuck with our own opinions and never have the thought about changing them. People can become self absorbed and not take into consideration that everyone has a different point of view on things that could help everyone broaden their horizons a little bit more. SLICE is a great oportunity for us all to do this by working in these groups with one another. Take it all in, and it will help in the long run.

  2. Your so right, well in my opinion. What if we didnt listen to others and just thought about ourselves? We would be unable to acomplish anything. I had to force myself to read the atheist story and try to read it with an open mind. When we open our minds and our eyes we can help so many people and sometime even ourselves.

  3. I agree with you when you say that people today really are judgmental even when they don't know the whole story yet. I think that it is great that we have an opportunity like SLICE where we get to be so involved with people who have different views of the world. It is crucial in life to realize that we are all different but that doesn't mean that we are not capable of working together for something bigger.

  4. Great Blog Christiana. I feel like if we didnt listen to others, we would not learn. Everyone in our society has gained knowledge through others. Very rarely do people develop ideas that are entirely new. We grow through the exchange of ideas.
